Mount Spokane Trail Plan Update

Project summary

Mount Spokane State Park is getting a trail plan update. This heavily used year-round "trails park" features distinct summer and winter trail experiences for a variety of recreational opportunities. The trail plan update will account for the significant changes to the park over the last 10 years and guide future investments in the park's trail system.

Mount Spokane State Park winter trail uses include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and backcountry skiing. In the summer, there's hiking, mountain biking, equestrian trail riding, huckleberry picking, and trail running. When complete, this updated trail plan will guide future investments in the park’s trail system over the next 10 years.

The Mount Spokane Trail Plan is being completed in two phases:

Phase 1 assesses the park’s trail current system. The draft document is anticipated to be completed in December 2023. This establishes a baseline for the trail system: planning context, trail conditions, where the trails are, what uses are allowed on which trails, and how visitors are using the trails.

Phase 2 starts in January 2024. It includes multiple community participation opportunities to help define the future vision of the park’s trail system.

Project history

The last extensive trail plan for Mount Spokane State Park was completed in 2009 as part of a Master Facilities Plan. In 2014, the Trail Plan (“2014 Plan”) was separately updated to incorporate additional input from the mountain bike community.

Many of the 2014 Plan's proposed projects are complete. Additionally, there have been significant changes to the park over the past 10 years including land acquisitions, changing recreational use patterns, increased visitation, expanded understanding of Mount Spokane’s habitats (both flora and fauna), growing recognition of Tribal interests, and developing land use and infrastructure in the surrounding urban areas that could further drive visitation to the park.
