    This initiates a series of ongoing, once a month, full day workshops exploring Alla Prima painting. Commit to your painting. Set aside one day a month and feel good about making it happen. Alla prima is Italian for “at the first” or “at once” and represents the technique of direct painting. Specifically, it has come to mean finishing a painting in one shot. The success or failure of the results rides on the inspiration of the moment and the skill of the artist. It calls for a totality of vision, seeing the “whole picture” in a simplified way. It requires discipline and an economy of technique so as to say more with less. It’s challenging but so satisfying when you pull it off. You will be working from still life materials, learning and practicing all the ways one can achieve a fresh, vibrant painting. Keeping your palette and painting tools clean is of paramount importance in this style of painting. You learn to work fast and cover your painting surface quickly.

  2. Build a Dining Chair

    You will go through the whole process of building a chair. Starting from a kit of blanks you will mill out all the components and do the joinery. You will do the detailed shaping of the components. Then glue and assemble the chair. Finally you will make make a plywood seat bottom. We will discuss options for upholstery, but will not be doing the upholstery in this class.
