Saint Edward Environmental Education and Research Center
Progress on the Environmental Education
and Research Center (EERC)
State Parks has hired SKL Architects to design the Environmental Education and Research Center in the historic Seminary gymnasium annex. The work is composed of design and construction in an approximately 2,400 SF interior space. Improvements will include a Multipurpose classroom/lab, with an entrance to the facility that is separate from the Park office entrance.
EERC will provide field learning and environmental research opportunities to K-12 students, local colleges, and neighboring communities. In addition to classroom and meeting space, the learning center will use the 326 acres of Saint Edward State Park as a living laboratory and outdoor classroom.
This Consultant team will prepare design drawings that include site plans, building plans, building elevations and indicate materials. They also will be onboard to manage construction of the building.
The project is expected to be built mid-Summer of 2021.
Saint Edward State Park was formerly a seminary, and later a school that closed in 1976 due to declining enrollment. State Parks acquired the building and site in 1977. Several of the buildings were acquired by Bastyr College in 2005. An agreement between State Parks and Daniels Real Estate, LLC was made in 2017 and allows for the seminary building’s restoration. The former Saint Edward Seminary, now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is set to open as an 82-room lodge and construction is underway. Part of this agreement allowed for the creation of an Environmental Education and Research Center (EERC).
