Fort Worden Pier, Boat Launch and Marine Science Learning Center
Fort Worden, Pier, boat launch, & Marine Science Learning Center: Improve or Replace
Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) is making plans with our consultant Anchor QEA of Seattle to improve recreational opportunities and the shoreline environment in the marine area at Fort Worden. The primary purpose of this project is to replace the existing boat launch with one that is more ecologically compatible with the shoreline and its natural processes and to also consider alternatives to either rehabilitate, remove, or remove and replace the pier. Because the Marine Science Center has a facility located on the pier, a new location will be considered in the mix of options.
This is the first phase of the project, which requires State Parks to prepare a predesign report for the Washington State Office of Financial Management. The report compares alternatives with each other. Many factors will be analyzed during this process including constructability and costs, compatibility with the natural environment, recreational access improvements, and consideration of aesthetics within the historical context of the fort.
State Parks is hosting a public meeting to present various alternatives. Please consider attending the meeting. We are asking you to comment on alternatives at the meeting or you can write Michael Hankinson, Parks Planner, see below.
