You can submit your state park event via email to get it placed on the calendar. The Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to Washington state parks and state-managed recreation lands. Alta Lake State Park

    Kick off the New Year with a FIRST DAY HIKE! Join a park ranger for a fun, fresh outdoor experience. Try to identify different types of animal tracks at Alta Lake. Explore the flora, fauna and geology of each park. Afterwards, enjoy coco, coffee and snacks while we all share stories by a campfire (weather specific).We will be practicing Leave No Trace principles at each event.

    We will meet at the park welcome booth at the entrance to the park.

    Gear: Dress for the weather. Wear warm clothes, sturdy shoes, a smile and dress in layers. Bring water. Optional items: yak tracks, snowshoes, hiking poles and leash for the dog.

    Difficulty: MODERATE

    Remember to bring your camera and binoculars.

Beacon Rock State Park

  1. First Day Hike 2019

    January 1, 2019, 10:00 AM @ Beacon Rock State Park

    Greet the new year with a hike up Beacon Rock for a breathtaking view of the Columbia River Gorge and a guided interpretive tour of this historic and geological wonder. Meet Ranger Alicia Feist, accompanied by an ASL interpreter, at the Beacon Rock Trail head Tuesday, Jan. 1, at 10 a.m. The moderate hike is just under 2 miles round trip. Bring a camera or binoculars, and be sure to dress for the cold weather with plenty of warm clothes. Leashed dogs are welcome.

    The outing concludes with a campfire at the Doetsch day-use picnic shelter to roast hot dogs and marshmallows and drink hot chocolate. There is no charge for the event and parking is complimentary on this Discover Pass Free Day. The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Bridgeport State Park

    We will meet at the park welcome booth, which is a short distance past the entrance gate, down the hill.

    Gear: Dress for the weather. Wear warm clothes, sturdy shoes, a smile and dress in layers. Bring water. Optional items: yak tracks, snowshoes, hiking poles and leash for the dog.

    Difficulty: EASY

    Remember to bring your camera and binoculars.

Cama Beach State Park

    Meet at the Drop off Shelter, 2 hikes to choose from- 1. Join park staff for a 2-mile hike through the forest to Cranberry Lake, with its impressive beaver dam. Enjoy hot beverages in the Cama Center after the hike. 2. Take a half-mile hike on the bluff trail to the waterfront trail and warm up with beverages in the Cama Center afterward. Meet at 10 a.m.

Cape Disappointment State Park

  1. First Day Hike at Cape Disappointment State Park

    January 1, 2019, 10:00 AM @ North Head Lighthouse parking lot

    Past, Present, and Future of North Head & Bell's View trails.
    Led by Interpretive Specialist Stephen Wood, the hike will illustrate the historical record of North Head, and focus on current efforts to restore the lighthouse. The hike will follow the Lighthouse Keepers Loop Trail, with story points along the trail, at the lighthouse and residence grounds.
    An optional hike extension will follow the Bell’s View trail for a glimpse into other historical layers of North Head such as the wireless radio station, weather bureau, and Fort Canby. The Lighthouse Keepers Loop and Bell’s View Trails will afford participants with excellent views of the Pacific Ocean, mouth of the Columbia River and Long Beach Peninsula.
    The trails to be covered are gravel and pavement, so footwear that provides easy movement over these surfaces is appropriate.
    No restrictions, however there are 20 stairs on the route.

Deception Pass State Park

  1. First Day Hike at Deception Pass State Park

    January 1, 2019, 10:00 AM @ Deception Pass State Park

    Beginning at the Civilian Conservation Corps Interpretive Center at Bowman Bay, park staff will guide hikers along the Pacific Northwest Trail, which runs along the coast of Fidalgo Island to Rosario Head. This is one of the most scenic trails in the entire park with views of the Salish Sea, the Maiden of Deception Pass and the Rosario tide pools. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles round trip. There is a steep incline at the beginning of the hike which may be difficult for young children. Please bring water, warm clothing and shoes with good traction. For everyone's comfort on the narrow trail, please do not bring dogs. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the hike.

Lake Chelan State Park

    Take a turn along the interpretive Little Bear Loop Trail through ponderosa pine forest and learn about the park’s unique position on the convergence of four ecological zones ranging from mountains to desert plateau. Or ask the ranger anything you want—he’s a pretty knowledgeable guy! Be prepared to spend some time in the snow and enjoying beautiful views of the crystal clear Lake Chelan!

    Meet at the day-use shelter at Lake Chelan State Park.

    Bring a camera and binoculars and be sure to dress for the cold weather. This hike is 2.5 miles and not ADA or stroller accessible. Dogs on leash are allowed. Join us afterwards for light refreshments.

Lake Easton State Park

  1. Guided Snowshoe Hikes

    Hikes will be about 3 miles on moderate terrain and last approximately 2.5 hours. All ages and ability levels are welcome. Guides will share tidbits on natural history, snowshoeing basics and safety information throughout the hikes. Please call after 9 a.m. on the day of the hike for status updates. Cancellations may occur due to road closures or other winter access issues.

    Come to the First Day Hike at Larrabee State Park! The hike will be led by a park staff member who will teach you about the history of the park, as well as the flora and fauna of the area.

    You will hike the 2 Dollar Trail to Fragrance Lake, where you can choose to hike around the lake, stay and enjoy the view, or hike back down to the trail head.
    There will be snacks and warm drinks provided after the hike.
    Wear warm clothes and sturdy shoes. Bring water and snacks for the hike.
    Meet at the 2 Dollar Trail head located on Cleator Rd. The hike is approximately 3.5 miles round trip.

    We invite you to join us at the park on New Year's Day for a guided winter walk as we explore beautiful old-growth forest. Come learn about the area's rich history, plants and animals. This scenic hike will take you under towering cedar and fir trees strung with lichen and moss, and through a lush understory of ferns. A short presentation will take place on the local wildlife as hikers are arriving.

    Join Ranger Hoppe on a hike to Cascade Falls at Moran State Park. Participants should park at the southend campground parking area at Cascade Lake. The hike follows a 1.5-mile trail past old-growth forest and Cascade Creek to Cascade Falls.

Rockport State Park

  1. First Day Hike

    January 1, 2019, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM @ Rockport State Park

    Our First Day Hike at Rockport will once again be led by local fitness expert Valerie Stafford, owner of Encore Fitness in Concrete. We will assemble at the day-use picnic shelter where Valerie will lead a warm up and give tips for a fun and healthy hike. After the hike all are invited to gather at the Discovery Center to warm up with a crackling fire in the wood stove, hot beverages and healthy snacks!

    This hike will kick off the 2019 “Healthy Hikes” program at Rockport State Park to encourage people to be fit and spend time in a rare and beautiful old-growth forest. Participants who log 100 miles of hiking in Rockport State Park throughout 2019 can earn a hand-carved and painted walking stick made by Senior Park Aide Don Smith. What a great way to step into the New Year!

    Wear weather appropriate clothing. Easy to moderate difficulty level, Trail is accessible to those with disabilities.

    To celebrate New Year's Day, today is a State Parks "free day" when a Discover Pass is not required to visit a state park. Please note, free days apply only to day use (not overnight stays or rented facilities). A Discover Pass is still required to access lands managed by the Washington state departments of Natural Resources and Fish & Wildlife on these days.

Twin Harbors State Park

    Beginning at the Schafer Island Road day-use area parking lot at Twin Harbors State Park, park staff will guide hikers along twisted wind swept pines of the Shifting Sands nature trails to the primary dune and ocean beach. Easy hike approximately 1-mile distance. Wear appropriate winter clothing, dress in layers and bring water. Dogs allowed on leash. Refreshments served after the hike. Hike is subject to change or cancellation depending on weather conditions. Call the park a few days prior to confirm details.
