  1. Foundations of Woodworking

    January 8, 2018 - March 30, 2018

    This course will drill deep into the basics, beginning with a firm foundation in understanding wood as a material and incorporates introductory training in a wide range of techniques. You'll leave with a in depth experience of hand tools, practice applications of joinery methods, consider choices for wood selection and working with non-toxic materials, and understand practical planning for designing and executing woodworking projects. The curriculum focuses on imparting skills through a series of projects designed to build on one another in techniques and complexity.

  2. Furniture Making: Finding your Voice

    This 12 week course is focused on developing the skills that will allow you to start to find your voice as a furniture designer / maker. Design will be the consistent thread through the numerous projects of this class. We will take a hybrid approach to furniture making by blending traditional hand tool techniques with pragmatic use of woodworking machines.

  3. Introduction to Drawing with Nonie Gaines

    You will learn the fundamentals of realistic drawing. You will gain skills in realistic three-dimensional drawing with an emphasis on form, value, and texture using a variety of drawing techniques and materials. We will also cover basic composition, linear perspective, and observational drawing. The techniques you learn will provide you with a visual language to express your personal artistic vision.

  4. Papier-Mache for Grown-Ups with Meg Kaczyk

    In this class series, you will learn how to use the simple craft of papier-mâché to make useful and beautiful vessels. It’s playtime for grown-ups. In this hands-on experience, you will make your creations using common objects such as bowls, cups and plates as forms. Then you’ll successively layer the form with newspaper strips and simple flour and water paste to build a rustic, sturdy vessel.

  5. Make It Abstract with Meg Kaczyk

    You will begin by drawing small images from a photo or realistic image. Then you will use water based paint and oil pastels. You'll identify the main composition, working with big shapes, and a few details. You'll play with color, and loosen your grip on realism.

  6. Magic of Colored Inks with Melissa Klein

    Colored inks offer a huge range of versatility for creating layers with your painting. You will learn how to create glow and shadow effects to add more depth and light to your painting. Mix colors beyond the basics to make both more naturalistic and vivid effects. Ink is a perfect medium between drawing and painting, it's a great way to explore and make the transition with confidence from drafting/drawing skills to painting. Inks can be used on their own or mix well with other water-based media to expand your range with watercolors. Beginners are welcome.

  7. Multimedia Art Journals with Kelly Drake

    In this class, you will start by creating simple, colorful backgrounds in your journal. Then, we will break out the paint, gesso, pens, pencils, pictures, ephemera and start creating. You will earn how to layer different media and materials, and use color, texture and design to create a journal full of ideas.

  8. Explorations (Grades 7-9)

    EXPLORATIONS affirms the gifts that every student offers. Through this immersive, week-long program, students are introduced to the world of arts and ideas, creative risk-taking, and personal development. It’s a total learning environment that challenges the mind and body in equal measure.

    Each day features four workshop sessions where students pursue their main interest then explore different genres in their other three classes. During breaks, participants connect with nature and explore the trails, beaches and historic monuments at Fort Worden State Park. Each evening, our faculty artists showcase their skills, followed by snacks and group activities in the dorm. The week concludes with a student showcase for friends and family to celebrate and witness the results of the week!
