Centennial Trail Asphalt Overlay

Project summary

Beginning in mid-April, the first 14 miles of the Spokane River Centennial Trail will temporarily close while Parks resurfaces the trail with a new layer of asphalt. The project is anticipated for completion in early September. 

Project highlights: 

  • Trail surface repair: Sealing pavement cracks, repairing damaged sections of the trail surface and adjusting catch basin/manhole lids. 
  • Asphalt resurfacing: Application of a 1.5-inch asphalt overlay to provide a new, smooth trail surface. 
  • Safety improvements: Enhancement of trail user safety by replacing and refurbishing existing bollards and improving pavement markings. 
  • Kiosk renovations: Perform maintenance and reroofing of kiosk structures. 

Estimated Project Timeframe: 

Beginning in mid-April with anticipated completion in early September (Labor Day Weekend). Anticipated construction timeline is subject to change. Updates or delays will be reflected on this page. 

Anticipated Trail Impacts: 

Project Update: May 15, 2024

  • Tree trimming and chipping is completed throughout the project area.
  • Utility box and storm drain height adjustments are completed throughout the project area.
  • Asphalt overlay has proceeded past the halfway point of the project area.
  • Re-establishment of the shoulders of the trail commenced from State Line this week and continues along the project area.
  • Safety painting, bollard refurbishment and kiosk work began this week.

Please note: All project areas remain closed.
